"What You Deserve"
I was channel surfing. And there it was, "Deal Or No Deal."
If you aren't familiar with the show, it's a game where various numbers of dollar amounts are displayed on a board. Strictly by chance, the contestant tries to eliminate all the low dollar amounts, so they can win the higher amounts. Everyone comes in hoping they will win the million dollars.
As the numbers are called and revealed, the banker makes an offer and the contestant agrees to a "deal" or "no deal." If there is no deal, then more numbers are called and the offer can go up or down.
On this particular show, the contestant was offered $125,000. Her family and friends can advise her on whether to take the deal or not. One of her friends said what I've heard before on the show, "You are the kindest, sweetest woman. You work so hard. You deserve more. No deal."
I thought about it. There is an offer of $125,000 for doing virtually nothing and a friend says, "You deserve more."
Why? Why does anyone deserve more?
- Do you deserve more because you go on a game show?
- Do you deserve more because you are sweet and kind?
- Do you deserve more because you've worked hard?
Think about it. What do you really deserve?
- You deserve death, and so do I. Romans 6:23 reads, "For the wages of sin is death."
- You deserve eternal separation from a righteous God. Romans 3:10 reads, "As it is written: There is none righteous, no, not one.'"
- You deserve to pay for every wrong thing you have done, whether killing another person or lying so you didn't get punished by your parents. Both are wrong and both demand payment.
That's what you and I deserve. But, God...
But, God made a way that we could get, not what we deserved, but what He chose to give us.
Romans 6:23 reads, "For the wages of sin is death, BUT the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
John 14:6 reads, "Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'"
Romans 3: 23-25 says, "Everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glorious standard, and all need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. They need to be made free from sin through Jesus Christ. God sent Him to die in our place to take away our sins. We receive forgiveness through faith in the blood of Jesus' death." (NCV)
John 3: 14-18, "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
What do you deserve? You deserve death and eternal separation from God. But, God in His great love made a way for us to come to Him free from sin. It is through believing on Jesus Christ and accepting His gift of forgiveness.
You deserve death. God, through His Son Jesus, chose to give us life. Have you accepted life?
