On a recent walk, while briefly visiting the Lancaster train station, Paul overheard a snippet of a mother's conversation with her son, who apparently was about to depart by train.
Lovingly she said, "Be safe." "Be careful." "Have a wonderful trip." After a short pause, she used her motherly "command" voice: "And pull up your pants!"
As a mother, we need to love our children. We give loving advice and provide tenderness in their lives. But, there comes a time when we need to state the facts. We need to provide reality and guide them to responsible living.
The church is called to love people. Jesus accepted people regardless of where they had been. He was compassionate. But, He never left people feeling good about themselves, while still holding onto their sin. He always called them to repentance. He was bold in saying there is only one way to redemption and only one Person who can give access to heaven.
John 14:6 reads, " Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" (NKJV)
We need to lovingly care about people. They need to see Jesus in the way we live our lives. We need to sympathize and encourage. We need to truly love.
But true love is bold enough to call people from sin to repentance. It requires that people recognize and admit their sin and then allow the Lord to make the necessary changes in their lives.
Loving people makes our life more pleasant. But, there comes a time when we need to state the facts. We need to provide reality and guide them to responsible living in Jesus Christ.
"Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" Lovingly preach it!
