Shelia Shares....
"Frightening Places"

There have been times in my life where I have been frightened. The place where I was just didn't seem safe.

I traveled by myself to Southern Africa in the 70s. I remember being in a Johannesburg, South Africa hotel during my layover. Everything was strange to me. I didn't understand the language. People looked different. It wasn't home and I was frightened. I remember pulling out the Gideon Bible and comforting myself with familiar scriptures.

I remember a drunken refugee student deciding to kill me. In his drunken state, the "rich American" was his target and I was the one available. I stayed in my apartment with the doors locked and very thankful for the burglar bars on the windows. Again, prayer took me through that frightening situation.

I remember a flight to Florida with Paul and our one-year-old son. When the plane had to make an emergency landing, I held Jason tightly on my lap, prayed and watched the waiting fire trucks lining the runway as we touched down. It was a frightening place to be.

Today, as I watch the news and all that is happening in our world, I can be very frightened. Events and decisions seem to keep our country spinning and going faster and faster out of control. The monetary stability seems to increasingly waver. It can be a very frightening place and time.

Are you frightened to be where you are?

I heard a quote this week which put it all in perspective for me. "The safest place on earth is in the center of God's will."

It really doesn't matter if you are in a foreign land or being threatened by a person or circumstances, or fearful in your own home. If you are where God wants you and doing what He wants you to do, it's "no fear" territory. Your security doesn't depend on circumstances or other people. God never changes and nothing takes Him by surprise.

Are you frightened to be where you are? Are you in the center of God's will? Then trust in a God who will take you through...and allow you to go with joy.
