Paul's Epistle...
"Stand For Life"

Tomorrow – January 22nd – marks what – to paraphrase a famous quotation – is a day that will live in infamy. On that date in 1973, the U. S. Supreme Court issued its infamous Roe v. Wade decision that, for all practical purposes, legalized abortion on demand. In effect, the court ruled that the "right to privacy" trumped the "right to life."

How interesting it is that the Bible doesn't assert any sort of absolute "right to privacy." God, after all, knows all of our thoughts. No "private" thoughts elude His notice. (Psalm 139:2; Psalm 94:11.) But He is the same God who commanded, "You shall not murder" (Ex. 20:13). And, have no doubt, God sees abortion as murder. And He knows (and loves) every child who's been killed in this way. He had a plan for them – a plan that sin aborted.

Here's a statistic that is absolutely mind-boggling — abortion is now the leading cause of death in the United States! According to Christian Action News, the annual death toll from abortions is about 1,310,000. Pause to consider how staggering that number is. It's as if the every individual resident of the entire state of New Hampshire – all 1,310,0001 of them – would have been violently killed last year.

Operation Rescue2 provides these grim statistics about abortion in America:

Operation Rescue also notes that Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion merchant in the United States, has located 80 percent of its abortion clinics in minority neighborhoods, disproportionally targeting minorities for abortion. This should come as no surprise. Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger, founded the agency specifically to reduce the black population, calling them "human weeds" — and worse. More blacks in the U. S. have died from abortion than from AIDS, accidents, violent crimes, cancer and heart disease combined. Since 1973, abortion has reduced the black population by more than 25 percent.3 Abortions are to Planned Parenthood as hamburgers are to McDonald's – their stock in trade. Except that taxpayers aren't subsidizing McDonald's. They – we – are subsidizing Planned Parenthood's bloody trade – to the tune of almost half a billion (with a ‘b') dollars one recent year.

Unfortunately, Planned Parenthood – and the abortion industry at large – have strong allies these days in the federal government. Christian Action News called the Obama administration "the most rabid pro-abortion administration in U.S. history." The American Center for Law & Justice says the Obama administration has, in fact, even been hiring outspoken pro-abortion activists to promote "Obamacare."

In an October 2009 speech, President Obama told Congress that "under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortion..." He lied. And the matter will go to the U. S. Supreme Court in March, thanks to some Christian business people who are gutsy and principled enough to take a stand against having to pay for abortions as part of the health care law.

Enough bad news. If you're read this far, you deserve some good news. There actually are some positive indicators.

Here's some even better (and more significant) news:

Although abortion is sin, God is in the business of forgiving sin. If you've personally been involved with an abortion in any way, God will forgive you – if you ask Him and you sincerely repent. In fact, He'll forgive you much more quickly – and certainly more completely – than you'll forgive yourself. But it's His forgiveness that will make an eternal difference for you.

At the most fundamental level, God's greatest gift is "life." It was His crowning achievement of Creation. That's why Satan and his followers are so pro-death.

In every way you can, you must take a stand for human life. It's sacred.

- Paul
