Paul's Epistle...
"Your Favorite Verses – Part 1"

Last week in this column I gave two lists, collected in various ways, of favorite verses. And I asked you to let me know what your favorite verse is – and why it's a favorite. Thank you to everyone who responded. Here are some of your verses and your reasons:

Psalm 46:10 - "Be still and know that I am God." Whenever I have gone through difficult times, I sing that verse (a chorus that I learned in church many years ago) that starts with that verse. It brings comfort to my soul knowing that God is in control. Even through the difficult times don't disappear, I know He is with me! – Corrie H.

Isaiah 40:31 - "but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." That is my favorite verse. Many years ago after suffering a breakdown, Isaiah 40 was the scripture that literally restored me. Especially verse 31; it became my theme verse. Many times since then it has re-energized me. – Mary Irvine

Philippians 4:13"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Each and every day can be a challenge and when I face an obstacle that I think would be impossible I recites this verse and remember it's Christ who strengthens me. – Barb Carico

Romans 8:37-39"No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." To know that nothing can come between God's love for me and mine for Him fills me with such joy. It's all I need. – Nancy S.

John 16:33"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." For many years [that has been] my favorite verse... It's been a great reminder and encouragement to me, as we fight the battles that come our way each day in this world, in our life – that Christ has overcome these for me. – Mike Franklin

Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." I love [that passage]... I sure can't trust in myself, Paul. His word is so comforting. In Him I trust! – Jan

Philippians 1:6"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." – I like this verse because it promises that God is not done with me yet. I never know what He will do next. But I am glad He knows and I trust Him to perform it perfectly. – Chris Demarest

Romans 12:2 "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God--what is good and acceptable and perfect." I think we should all write to our senators and congressmen and include [that verse]... That would apply to decisions about gay marriages, taking God out of everything, abortion and pornography – everything that is turning our world upside down – sending us in a downward spiral... – Jeri Johns

Psalm 19:14 "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer." My mother told me that an aunt of hers quoted this Scripture all the time. Several years ago I cross-stitched the verse for my mother. It hangs on the wall behind her chair and I see it every day. It helps to keep me grounded. – Sylvia Purvis

I love reading why these verses are so special to you. I have many more that you've emailed to me. I'll share more of them in a few weeks. If you haven't shared your favorite, let me know what it is and tell me in a short sentence or two (as above) why it's so special to you. Thanks!

- Paul
