From the broadcast the weekend of June 26th & 27th, 2010:

This was our official Singing News Top 20 Countdown edition, based on the chart appearing in the magazine's new July issue. We actually managed to include all twenty songs this time, but we had to skip having a Featured Artist on this program to be able to do it. The reason, as I explained on the air, is because there are currently so many lengthy songs in the Top 20 that we just couldn't fit everything in otherwise. In fact, there are four five-minute-plus songs included in the Top 20. That's something I can't recall ever happening in the 30 years I've been doing this program. What's more, several of the other songs are also longer than usual. ("Typical" song length is about three to three-and-a-half minutes.) Our program has only a plus-or-minus five-second leeway for total length each week to meet "network timing" requirements, so something had to give. You might recall that last time (the June countdown) we had to begin with number 18. This time we would have had to start at least with number 17, had we not eliminated the Featured Artists.

One note about all this is that there is nothing inherently wrong with long songs, even though you heard Mark Trammell say on the program that the record companies all cautioned against sending out radio songs that are more than five minutes long. This has more to do with radio formatics than with content. You'll quickly notice that the five-minute-plus songs on this program may have been long, but they carried powerful messages that, frankly, might make you forget entirely about how long they are. And, after all, successfully conveying the Gospel message is what Gospel music is all about.
