the weekend of May 29th & 30th, 2010: |
"Warm," "engaging," "real,"
"down-to-earth" these are all terms that have been rightly applied
to our Featured Artists of the week, the McKameys. Their ascendency
to national attention during the 1980s came at the time when The Gospel
Greats program was growing nationwide, so we feel as if we've been moving
on parallel tracks for three decades. Their many number one songs over the
years (including their new one) have proven that they have consistently been
able to find and record some of the most meaningful songs out there.
Songs on this program were from the McKameys' current CD, "The
Message." Several of the songs on that CD were written by Sheryl
Farris, who, as you know, is now back with the group, replacing Carol
Woodard who retired from the road last year. So, today's group includes
Peg and Ruben Bean, their daughters, Connie Fortner and
Sheryl Farris, Connie's husband, instrumentalist Roger Fortner,
and Connie's and Roger's son, Eli. More info about the McKameys
can be found
here.
The McKameys' CD featured on this program, "The
Message," is available from our mailorder service, Springside. Just call

On the Headline Update you heard excerpts from
our recent interview with Jerry Kirksey, who's retiring as Editor-in-Chief
of Singing News magazine. Jerry's been responsible for every one of
the 492 issues published over the past 40-some years. He is undoubtedly one
of the most knowledgeable persons on the planet when it comes to Southern
Gospel music's rich history. Jerry's been a good friend to us over the years
as we worked together in so many ways, in the public eye and also behind
the scenes for the betterment of Southern Gospel music. I'm glad he'll still
be doing some writing for the magazine, without the pressure of responsibility
that being the Editor-in-Chief brings. That mantle now falls to another very
knowledgeable journalist, Danny Jones, whom we certainly wish well
for the next generation of leadership at the Singing News.
