| From the program
aired the weekend of Jan. 19th & 20th, 2008: |
Our Featured Artists on this edition were the Imperials, with songs
from their new CD called "Back To The Roots." From my comments on
the air: "The name 'the Imperials' has been well-known in Gospel music circles
since way back in 1963, when the legendary Jake Hess put the quartet
together. A lot has happened over the years, with forays into more contemporary
styling than quartet fans were used to. But their music especially
back in the 1970s and 1980s caught on with a whole new generation.
The last original member to reitre was bass Armond Morales, who retired
in 2003, later selling the group to his son, Jason. Today's group
includes Jason Morales, Jeremie Hudson, Shannon Smith and Ian
Owens." Ian, by the way, has a bass voice that sometimes is amazingly
reminiscent of Armond's.
Songs from the Imperials heard on this program (except for their current
hit, "All That Matters To the Lord,") come from that "Back To The
Roots" CD, which includes the current group's remakes of some of the
songs that were so big for the original Imperials back in their heyday. In
fact, the original cut of "Praise the Lord" was at or near the top
of the Singing News chart back in 1980 when our broadcast was just
getting started. Although some of the music recorded by today's Imperials
is more contemporary than many quartet traditionalists would like, that is
not the case with this CD, and it's a reflection of the fact that these guys'
roots are, indeed, in Southern Gospel quartet signing. In fact, in providing
a musical variety, today's group is being true to the history of the Imperials.

Our Artist Spotlight guest on this program was Quinton Mills. Back
in the 1980s, Quinton Mills received quite a bit of attention for what remains
one of his most popular songs ever, "I Found A Lily In My Valley."
Quinton's been singing and ministering continuously ever since, but he
hasn't been getting as much attention nationally as he once did. Now, though,
his current CD, "Purple Heart," is catching the public's attention
once again, thanks in part to his song, "He Put It There." In fact,
I think I mentioned on a previous program that this song was introducing
Quinton and his music to a whole new generation. If you'd like Quinton's
"Purple Heart" CD, we'll extend the Featured Artist Discount (20 pecent)
to this as well.
Here's the
link to that CD in our webstore. Just follow the rules (given above)
for requesting the discount.

As the end of this broadcast you heard that powerful pro-life song recorded
20 years ago by Gold City, "Only God Knows." And you heard
the writer of that song, Sheldon Wade Mencer, talk about the amazing
response it has received over the years. This song and the interview was
aired in conjunction with the start of Sanctity of Human Life Week,
marking 35 years since the Supreme Court legalized abortion in the USA. More
information about this was distributed in my e-mail newsletter last week.
If you don't get it (and you should!)
you
can read it online here. Included there is a transcript of the lyrics
for "Only God Knows."
Please remember that January is Station Appreciation Month on
The Gospel Greats program. See above for details. But please be sure
to thank the station on which you hear our program for bringing it to you
each week. That'll help keep The Gospel Greats program coming your
way.
