From the program aired the weekend of Jan. 5th & 6th, 2008:

This broadcast was second (concluding) half of our year-in-review special, Gospel 2007 In Review, counting down the top songs of 2007 according to Singing News magazine. This program included the top 20 songs. We've been receiving a lot of very nice comments about this "special," which we do each year. It's great to remember the top songs of the year and to hear from all of the artists or songwriters involved with those songs.

During the research process for the year-in-review, I usually compile a list of deaths during the year in the Southern Gospel music community which have been reported during the year on our Headline Update. Although I didn't have time to include the list on the broadcast this year (other than mentioning a few notables such as Roger Bennett and Jim Hamill in connection with songs by their quartets) here is the list for 2007:

  • Bud Chambers, songwriter, Jan. 26.

  • Terry McMillan, Nashville studio musician and Gaither Homecoming instrumentalist, Feb. 2.

  • Jack Campbell, songwriter, Feb. 12.

  • Don Baldwin, former member of Couriers, Feb. 24.

  • Roger Bennett, Legacy Five pianist, March 17.

  • Bob Crews, Harmoneers Quartet veteran, March 19.

  • Wallace Lewis, Lewis Family instrumentalist, May 16.

  • Howard Welborn, Plainsmen, May 27.

  • J. M. "Whitey" Gleason, Blackwood Brothers, Gospelaires, other groups, June 30.

  • Bob Jones, Sr., Songfellows, July 27.

  • Cecil Simmons, legendary booking agent, July 29.

  • Trenton Wood, 3 for 1, September.

  • Alden Toney, founder of Toney Brothers, Oct. 21.

  • Fred Daniel, Sunshine Boys, Nov. 5.

  • Jerrell McCracken, Word Records pioneer, Nov. 7.

  • Wayne Hodge, Tennesseans, Thanksgiving Day.

  • Rev. Don Pfeifer, patriarch of Pfeifers, November.

  • Jim Hamill, Kingsmen, Nov. 29.

Speaking of the late Jim Hamill, if you are anywhere within driving distance of Marietta, Georgia, you are invited to a special "Jim Hamill Memorial Concert" January 25th. It's at the Open Bible Tabernacle, 545 Lorene Drive in Marietta, and will feature the Mark Trammell Trio, the Diplomats, the Old Paths Quartet, the "Original" Liberty (Gerald Sweatman, Jacky Fortner & Ronnie Grizzle) and Calvary's Way. Promoter Charlie Sexton promises, "This isn't going to be a typical concert." Proceeds from this event will be used to help defray some of the considerable medical expenses incurred by the Hamill family during Jim's lengthy illness. For more information call Sexton at 404-210-5478 or visit his website, www.sweetcreekpromotions.com.
